Why It
Matters

Society influences girls’ and women’s perceptions of their bodies through the promotion of unrealistic appearance ideals, the sexual objectification of female bodies and the criticism of their physical competence. This never-ending evaluation of female bodies can lead to appearance surveillance and preoccupation among girls, which can diminish their concentration and connection with their body during sport, and therefore their performance.

Alternatively, positive body image promotes a deep connection between the mind and body, whereby one appreciates, respects and nourishes the body, while protecting it against harmful societal expectations. As a coach, you play a key role in athletes’ sport experience. You can significantly impact athletes’ mental health and well-being, including their body image.
