COACH'S CORNER CASE STUDY 2

You are a surfing coach. It is the start of the season and a new girl, Asya, has joined your group. You notice that she is uncomfortable changing on the beach, even though the rest of your group has gotten accustomed to changing in front of one another.

What could you do? Select the best response below.

Not quite. Although your other athletes may be comfortable changing in front of each other, Asya’s concerns are still valid. Some of your other athletes might also feel more comfortable changing somewhere more private.

Correct! By providing your athletes with choice and safe spaces, you can reduce their body image and privacy concerns.

Not quite. Although this may be suitable for some athletes and some sports, Asya might not feel comfortable wearing her wetsuit to and from the beach.

Not really. Although you can’t always provide changing facilities due to what is available on different beaches, you can provide portable or pop-up tents that can give your athletes privacy when they change.

Asya doesn’t have her own wetsuit, so you will provide one for her. However, you don’t have many size options and Asya is worried that none of the sizes you have will fit her.

What could you do? Select the best response below.

Correct! You could reassure Asya that you will find a wetsuit for her and encourage her to take part in today’s session wearing her regular clothes or bathing suit if appropriate. Make sure that you order extra sizes and styles in the future.

Not really. As a coach, you can ensure that you order a wide size and style range of wetsuits before a new season and advocate for your athletes to choose the size and style that they feel most comfortable in.
